In the early morning of September 16th 1810 a church bell in Dolores, Guanajuato rang out, gathering all the towns’ people. A priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla wanted to gather the people of Mexico to rise against the Spanish crown. It took another 11 years for Mexico to gain independence but this event, known as the Grito de Dolores, was the spark that began it all.
Today the biggest celebration happens in Mexico City where at 11 p.m. on the night of the 15th the President steps out on to the balcony of the National Palace overlooking a massive crowd in the decorated courtyard. There he rings a similar bell to the one once used by Hidalgo and comments on the historical Heroes of Mexico ending with an enthusiastic “Viva Mexico!”
At Secrets Resorts & Spas, we will be celebrating with an explosion of Mexican culture. Experience real Mariachi music, authentic Mexican cuisine, traditional Mexican-style games and activities and to top it all off the beautiful color and life that only a celebration from the passionate people of Mexico could accomplish. Talk to your concierge for all the details.
At Secrets Marquis Los Cabos, we are committed to a variety of environmentally-friendly practices to support and promote sustainable tourism efforts and social responsibility. We are lucky to be located in a place of incredible natural beauty and are proud to do our part to preserve both the land and sea environments around us for future generations and the creatures that call Los Cabos home. Below are some of the ways we work to promote sustainable practices at Secrets Marquis Los Cabos.
- Rainforest Alliance Verified™
Secrets Marquis Los Cabos earned this designation for its commitment to reducing its environmental impact within the resort and the surrounding community. This mark is awarded to tourism businesses that adopt best management practices and meet specific criteria developed and/or endorsed by the Rainforest Alliance.
- Water Desalting Plant
The Water Desalting Plant at Secrets Marquis Los Cabos is a vital initiative at the resort. This plant pumps in ocean water and sends it through a process to remove the salt from the water. Upon completion of this process, the clean, filtered water is used as the main water supply for the resort. In turn, Secrets Marquis is able to refrain from using the local water supply and preserve water.
- Ecological Soap
This environmentally friendly practice allows the resort to reduce its use of chemicals by providing guests with all-natural soap, made from cactus, right in the resort’s laundry room.
Compost is made on site from the uneaten and unused vegetables and organic matter that is left over from the kitchen. The compost is then used as fertilizer in the resort’s gardens. The use of compost removes chemical fertilizers from the resort, providing the vegetation with all natural fertilizers.
- Turtle Protection and Release Program
Each year between the months of May and August, Secrets Marquis Los Cabos is dedicated to protecting the turtles that nest their eggs on the resort’s beachfront. Once the turtles hatch, resort guests are invited to participate in the turtle release. At this time, staff and guests protect and guide the newly-hatched turtles back to their natural ocean habitat.
When you choose Secrets Marquis for your next vacation, you can rest assured that you’re making a socially and environmentally responsible decision. Learn more about sustainability here and book your stay with Secrets Marquis Los Cabos!

At Secrets Resorts & Spas, our focus is on creating luxury vacation experiences for all of our valued guests. However, we also feel it is incredibly important to look for opportunities to enrich the local communities around us that make our resort locations so special. As part of the ongoing Community Outreach Programs at Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay and Secrets St. James Montego Bay, our dedicated resort staff recently visited the Granville All-Age School in St. James where they read to the children, sang with them, helped with arts & crafts, fed them lunch and simply just took the time to talk with them.
The program was part of Granville’s annual Summer Arts Workshop, a unique model for addressing the educational needs of children in this under-served community of Jamaica. The school is partnered locally with the Fairfield Theatre, National Youth Service and the University of West Indies-Western Jamaica campus. So far 85 children are registered; the highest turn-out since this program began in 2011. We’re proud to call these employees our own and to make a difference in the lives of all these wonderful children that they had the opportunity to meet at Granville!
