Wonderful Vacation, Wish We Never Left

My wife and I just got back from a wonderful stay at Secrets Silversands. We only stayed 5 nights which was a mistake…we should have stayed much longer! The entire place is beautiful and clean, and the staff is friendly and very professional. They were even polite when they were kicking us out of the pool at 3 am… = )

Rooms: Very nice all around. Large, clean, quiet. We stayed in the much-maligned building #4 in a room that faced the resort next door. However, we did not hear any of the alleged generator sounds that others have mentioned. Our view wasn’t the best, but we didn’t spend that much time in the room anyway! The beds were very comfortable, and we had maid service every day.

Food: By and large it was excellent. The breakfast buffet is what you might expect to find in any hotel lobby in the states, and was just OK. For lunch every day either Oceana or the Seaside Grill are open. Both are excellent and overlook the main pool and the ocean. We like eating outside, so we never ate at the indoor lunch buffet. For dinner we ate at El Patio (Mexican, excellent), Himitsu (Asian, phenomenal), Ratatouille (Mediterranean, good), Oceana (Seafood, excellent), and Portofino (Italian, wonderful). Food portions are kind of small, but that is a very good thing. You can order an appetizer, entrée, and dessert with every meal, but you don’t feel stuffed and bloated afterwards. We ordered room service for breakfast the morning we were leaving. We called the night before and asked that it be delivered at 6:45, and it was right on time. There is a small room service menu in the room that only has a few options, but you can order anything you like.

Drinks/bars: Excellent all around. There is a drink of the day featured every day, and they will also make any drink you can imagine. (We spent one night at the Veranda bar dreaming up cocktails….) I tipped about $1 a round, and we got excellent service. Like others have noted, some of the top shelf liquor is kept in the cabinet, but much of it is left out in plain sight, too. Just ask for what ever you want, and if they don’t have it they will offer an alternative. I asked for Cognac one night. They didn’t have it, but they offered me a Mexican brandy that was excellent.

Beach/Pools: The beach is not great, but the pools are awesome. Clean. Warm. No kids splashing. The main pool is for fun, and the other pools are for lounging. All are wonderful. Definitely try the water aerobics that take place every day at noon in the main pool. It sounds terrible and for old ladies, but it is a lot of fun (and good for hangovers!). Also, don’t forget to put on sunscreen and to reapply often! The sun is very intense, and we spent so much time in the pool that we forgot to reapply a couple of times and got a little burnt.

  1. We loved Secrets Silversands last week. I’m still working on our review.

Any chance you can post the recipe for that delicious Coconut margarita we had at the Mexican restaurant?
