I have never really been the wedding-type girl. The one who grows up planning this big, elaborate fairytale wedding that would end up costing more than most people make in a year. I never had dreams of the perfect dress and the over-the-top cake, because well that’s just not me.

Part of my reluctance, or I guess more correctly my lack of caring about weddings, was because my parents aren’t married and never have been. They sealed the deal before I was born, even if it wasn’t legal. I know that isn’t the traditional way, and may seem a bit taboo to some people, but my parents are still together and happy, which is sadly more than many married couples.

So when my husband proposed – to which I said yes whole heartedly – I knew I was eventually going to have to do what I had so little desire to do, plan my wedding. At this point, a little part of me was wishing my husband-to-be would turn groomzilla and plan the whole thing; however, he couldn’t be less that guy.

 So after a little procrastinating, we decided that in order for us to fully enjoy our engagement and our wedding that a small destination wedding was the right choice for us.

We ending up deciding on Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun in Mexico and I couldn’t have been happier. In my experience, destination weddings and this particular resort took all the pressure of wedding planning off. It was what I had always wanted, but I just hadn’t known it all these years. When it came to the big day, we were able to celebrate with our family and friends without having to worry about a thing. We laughed, we cried, we partied and everyone left having a great time.
