Guests and fans at Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya celebrate International Turtle Day!

Akumal means “Place of Turtles” in the Mayan language. Akumal is a small bay located south of the Riviera Maya corridor, between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

“Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya takes good care of my family and I because this is our home! In this wonderful bay, a unique sea grass grows in the bottom of the reef where my family can feed all year. If you are snorkeling, there’s a chance you might see us.“

At Secrets Akumal, we are excited to share that Akumal Bay was recently declared a protected refuge for sea life including three different species of turtles by the Mexican Government.

There are two species of turtle that visit Akumal beach every year during the nesting season, which spans from May until November. These two species are the Loggerhead Turtle and Hawksbill Sea Turtle.  The third one, the “Green turtle” lives here all year long.

During this period, the turtles come out of the sea to nest in the beach, where they lay their eggs and return to the sea.

May 23 was International Turtle Day and Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya hosted a beautiful activity with guests to show them the measures we take during turtle season to ensure the protection of the nests.

Secrets Akumal takes the following measures to ensure nest and turtle protection:

1. Placing wood stakes with rope around the nest to make sure it is visible to everyone and people avoid stepping on it
2. Placing signs that indicate there are turtle nests in that spot
3. Notifying local authorities who record the number of nests in the bay
